Abstract

This website will present the ring shout, an essential ritual performance of the Gullah Geechee community that began as a socioreligious ritual to create a liminal space of community from the collective traditions of their natal West African cultures and Christianity of North America. The ring shout allowed them to carve out a space of community and sense of presence, against a larger society where they held neither. Over time, it’s transformed to meet the need for a secular ritual of remembrance and manifest as a spiritual performance with elements in modern-day gospel and Afro-Baptist music traditions.
